When Data Is Empty, What Is Vietnamese Athletics Missing?
(3) Nguồn: Stage-2 Deep Professional Analysis, truy cập May 7, 2026. Hỏi đáp liên quan: Hỏi: Vì sao không thể đánh giá? Đáp: Vì thiếu dữ liệu gốc để đối chiếu. Hỏi: Bài học cho truyền thông thể thao Việt Nam? Đáp: Cần xây dựng hệ thống dữ liệu mở, có kiểm chứng.
This afternoon, Thong Nhat Stadium has no television broadcast. I sit in the old stands and watch a group of young athletes warm up on the track. No one holds a stopwatch. No wind gauge. No slow-motion camera. When the whistle blows, they run with everything they have, then stop, gasping for air. I ask myself: what were their results? Not because I forgot to time them, but because there is no system behind them to record the numbers.
Days later, I read an in-depth athletics analysis. The document has nine sections: event and performance analysis; athlete condition; competition structure and qualification; competitive landscape; rules and anti-doping; team and coaching system; risk map; public narrative; industry transmission. Every section returns the same answer: N/A. Not enough data. Cannot assess.
That sounds like a failure of the analyst. I think differently. N/A is a discovery, not a mistake. It tells us we have a sport running on inspiration, but no system for seeing itself clearly. Names like Nguyen Thi Oanh, Nguyen Thi Huyen and Le Tu Chinh have made crowds rise. But after each season, how much traceable data did they leave behind? How much footage was analyzed? How many parameters were checked? The answer is hidden inside those N/A cells.
In athletics, a result only means something when placed in context. The same 11.20 seconds over 100m is different with a +2.0 tailwind than with a -1.5 headwind. It is different at 1,500m altitude than near sea level. It is different in new carbon-plated spikes than in ordinary shoes. Without these numbers, an athlete can be misjudged. Worse, a talented athlete can be ignored because no one has enough data to prove their potential.
The document also reveals a larger blind spot: injury history. An athlete returning from a hamstring injury is not the same as one who never stopped running. If we only look at the latest medal, we will not see the damage waiting to return. Athletics is unforgiving; the body does not excuse impatience. But when injury records are not digitized, every training decision is based on intuition instead of evidence.
The selection process also needs transparency. Is the national championship the only door? Are World Ranking points counted? How long is the qualification window? When these cells are empty, every national team decision is open to doubt. Not because there is a mistake, but because there is no way to verify it.
The biggest problem is not analysis. It is data collection. I have watched provincial meets where officials wrote results in pencil in a notebook. Those pages can be lost. They are not digitized. They are not cross-checked. They never become data.
Many people will say Vietnamese sports need better coaches, better facilities, more scholarships. I do not deny that. But let me ask the opposite question: what happens when a talent appears and no one notices? If a girl runs 100m in a distant district, with no timer and no camera, does her performance exist? In modern sport, the answer is no. It is only a village story.
I do not want N/A cells to turn into invented numbers. I want them to become the right questions. Every season, how many female athletes run without a single record being kept? Let us start filling the first cell. Because when data is complete, glory will no longer be luck.
